I think you completely missed the point of the film. The samurai is Sam because Sam (himself is getting in the way of his own self-realization). He has to "defeat his villain" which is just his shadow. Understanding of this relationship slowly comes to him throughout the film. Venice (IT), 1992. I saw this movie in a open-air cinema in Venice with my ex-girlfriend, who left me few months before, and to whom I was still in love with. The movie was moving in so many way that I was totally absorbed by the love chase story. When Nick Cave’s “I’ll love you till the end of the world” chorus played, I couldn’t help hold my tears. And I was also so amazed by the beauty of Solveig Dommartin (Claire)… 8 year later I met a girl who looked very much like her and fell in love also because of this… She’s my wife now and sometimes we joke about how Wim Wenders made us meet. This movie is bound in so many ways to my own life…

The background information you gave at the start of this video was truly eye opening, amazing work and video! I already loved this movie, but I think I may love it even more now.

I always see people saying the people that love " literally me" characters didn't get the point of the character when really those people don't get why they find them so relatable.

The cinematography is the best. From a very basic story line. Shows that with a combination of mood creation, actors on top of their game and a mesmerising score you CAN produce a masterpiece. Loved it from the first time I saw it in the 80's.

The only reason I knew this film existed was because the band Electric Hellfire Club has a rockin' track called "D.W.S.O.B." that apparently is only on the film's soundtrack, none of their own albums.

I've been watching this movie since February 1993 and it's my favourite, Not the best film I've ever seen - but my favourite. I agree with almost all you've said. I'm sure you've noticed that the herb gardener's wife here is the same actress who had a larger role in Ozu's Tokyo Story (which certainly IS the best film I've ever seen). And I had the privilege of seeing Lou Reed live around that time, including 'What's Good'.

This film reminded me of Pink Floyd's film 'The Wall'. Both films are hallucinatory and have themes of madness and isolation, symbolised by an endless wall which traps the main characters. There's also a scene where [SPOILERS] the main character undergoes a violent body horror transformation and becomes an evildoppelganger of himself.
